Sunset Hills Montessori School - Letter from the Founder

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your interest in Sunset Hills Montessori School.

The goal of Sunset Hills Montessori School is to provide the finest environment possible for children to grow - intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. We try to meet that goal by applying the philosophy and methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.

Montessorians are frequently asked if our curriculum and the methods and philosophy at its foundation - methods that were designed at the beginning of the 20th Century - can apply to the children and society of the 21st Century. Among Dr. Montessori's most famous aphorisms was the advice, “Follow the child.” This means that the classroom and the whole school environment must reflect the needs of the children the school is serving. It calls for a dynamic, child-centered environment where children can grow and prosper - socially, emotionally, and intellectually.

But the foundation remains the same. The pink tower (or tower of cubes), movable alphabet, and bead bars that are in the classroom today are virtually unchanged since the Casa dei Bambini, Dr. Montessori’s first “Children's House. ” The beautiful wooden puzzle maps are also still in the classroom, but a child today might use a computer to access a topographical map to enhance his understanding of the physical world. The students of Sunset Hills get the best of both worlds, past and present.

Our lead teachers are trained and certified in the Montessori Method of Education. They are also men and women who continue to enhance their learning by reading books and journals in education and related fields (psychology, child development, etc.) and by attending workshops and seminars on the latest research regarding children.

I hope that the following information will answer many of the questions you may have about the school. If, after reading this information, you are interested in considering us for your child, please call and make an appointment to observe a classroom in session. The best education for your child is our first concern, as I know it is yours.

Sincerely,

Eileen Dowds Minarik
